Do you rely on social media for your business? It’s a powerful marketing method but what happens when it’s broken?
That’s exactly what millions of business owners went through yesterday when Facebook and Instagram were down most of the day.
A worldwide Facebook outage can wreck your business if you are relying solely on the social media giant.
Check out this news article headline from an online news outlet that was posted during Facebook and Instagram’s most severe outage ever!
Everyone went over to Twitter to complain about it!
With over 3 billion users affected by the outage, your Facebook or Instagram marketing efforts would suffer in a big way!
When you rely on social media for your entire marketing strategy, you cannot control anything about the platform.
This includes more than just outages. Here’s a few things to consider when only using social media for your business (in addition to a network outage.)
- Your account can get shut down and you have NO access to your audience.
- People may not see your posts due to algorithm changes and your posts become a ghost town.
- Facebook can remove any post based on its own discretion and no one will see them.
- You don’t own anything you post to any social media network.
Those are just a few things to think about that you DO NOT control in social media.
So …
Is social media good for your business? Of course! It’s one powerful way to multiply your revenue.
But …
You need to expand your marketing to methods that you own and control. When you have an asset on the Internet that belongs to you, YOU own it!
How to Create your Own Online Asset
Depending solely on social media for your online business is risky. Creating your own online assets that you own and control should be a priority for your business with social media being an extension of that.
The two best ways to create your own asset are:
- Business Blogging
- Email Marketing
Create a Business Blog as an Online Asset
I highly recommend that you start a blog, which is an asset for your business. A blog is an asset that you own and control.
When I started a blog back in 2009, I had no idea what I was doing. But I pressed on with writing blog posts that would interest my target audience.
I still make money from those early blog posts and was able to grow a customer base of over 11,000.
The best part?
It doesn’t matter if Facebook and Instagram are working or not! My blog still gets traffic, provides values to readers and makes a profit.
Once you have a business blog and continue to maintain, use social media as another means of driving traffic to your blog, your central hub on the Internet!

Build Your Email List as an Online Asset
Do you have an email subscriber list? It’s another online asset that is not dependent on social media.
You own the list and can send email to your subscribers whenever you want.
Once you have your blog up and running, you can add opt-ins to start growing your subscriber list.
You can use your email list in a number of ways: drive traffic to your blog, send out offers, and much more!
Again, whether Facebook is up or down is irrelevant because you’ll still have your list.
I want to point out that if you have followers on your Facebook Page, they are on Facebook’s list, not yours!

Conclusion
Why would any business put all their time and energy into a social media network that they do not own or have control over? Many people feel it’s easier or a simple way to get exposure.
That may be true to an extent but it’s not YOUR ASSET. At any time, it can be taken away from or have a massive outage. And let’s not forget that you don’t own the subscriber email list, the social media network does.
