Looking for ways to get more blog traffic? Repurposing your blog content is a powerful way to drive traffic to your site.
Creating high quality content for your blog takes a lot of time! What if you could take that same content and use it in various mediums online to increase blog views, gain a new audience and get backlinks?
I like to reuse content because it saves me time and I’m able to extend my reach even further.
This post will help you learn how to get more blog traffic using these simple but powerful ways to repurpose website content.
What is Repurposing Content?
Repurposing content is a way to recycle existing content to other mediums. Some of the benefits include extending your reach and getting your content in front of more people who prefer mediums other than a blog. For example, you can easily turn blog post content into a video. Another way to repurpose content is to make changes that would appeal to a slightly different audience.
It’s one of the most powerful content marketing strategies you can use.
Why Repurpose Content from your Blog?
Content repurposing is a way to take an existing blog post and adapt it to a different medium like video, audio or PDF. If you wrote a piece of high-quality content, you can breathe new life into it using other mediums.
For example, I’ve talked to a lot of bloggers lately who are overwhelmed with the thought of writing blog posts and then creating additional video content for YouTube. They think they have to create more new content. That is simply not true!
Instead, make the most out of the content you already wrote. You put all that time into it didn’t you? Your content deserves to be seen by multiple audiences that you may not reach by blogging on its own.
Derek Halpern of Social Triggers has said: “You don’t have to create content day in and day out. You just have to work on getting the content you already have in the hands of more people.”
I agree with him! Learning how to repurpose content can save you a lot of time and double your traffic too!
For example, not everyone likes to read blog posts. Some people prefer to digest content via video while others like to listen to a podcast or download a PDF.
When you reuse your blog content, you can expand your audience and get tons more engagement.
Which Blog Content Should you Repurpose?
The best content to reuse in other mediums should be popular posts, evergreen content and posts that you can update with new information.
- Popular posts. Look through your blog statistics to find which posts are the most popular over a period of time. These are the ones you want to focus on because there is already an interest in the topic.
- Can you add to an existing topic? If you have a quality blog post that you can add even more information to, use that. For example, you could make a video by reusing the bulk of the content and then add a new tip or two.
- Reuse evergreen content for longevity. I love evergreen content. It’s always relevant and never goes out of style or trend. If you have evergreen content, recreate that same content in different mediums. I have some videos that just keep getting more and more traffic, driving a good part of it to my websites.
What are the Top Ideas for Reusing your Best Content?
Here are my tops ways to get more traffic to your blog from reused content. Which one of these do you like the best?
1. Create YouTube Videos from Blog Content
This is my favorite way to reuse content so I was excited to put it first in the list. It’s also the most powerful! Think about this: YouTube is a the second largest search engine in the world (and owned by the first: Google.)
Online video accounts for 74% of online traffic. You are missing out in a big way if you aren’t taking advantage.
With over one billion users, nearly one third of all people online are watching YouTube videos. Plus, it’s much easier to get found in YouTube search than to have your blog found in Google search.
People love video because they can see and hear you. Making money online is also about building relationships with people and videos is the best way to do that.
You can get targeted visitors to your website from YouTube videos.
Here’s the steps that I use to repurpose my content into videos.
- Select the content to reuse.
- Read it or have it in front of me for reference.
- Create a video of exactly the same content but in my own speaking words. Have a call to action at the end to direct people to my blog.
- Edit the video to cut out all the mistakes and parts where I looked at my reference notes.
- Upload to YouTube.
- Optimize the video with a great title, description, and tags. Be sure to include YOUR website URL in the description.
- Publish the video and embed it in the blog post whose content I reused. Place a text link back to the video page.
Are you too shy? Create a presentation where you are not seen on camera. Make it exciting and fun!
In this example, even if a small percentage of visitors click that link, the website in the description would receive an enormous amount of traffic. At 2%, that would be over 159,000 visitors to the website! Did I do my math correctly?
Not only will you expand your audience through YouTube, but more of those people will be visiting your website. Always make sure the link in the description is relevant to the topic of the video so Google can index it for search engine optimization!
You can also make your videos interactive with YouTube cards. These are overlays that can direct visitor back to your website with just a click.
Cards can point viewers to a specific URL (from a list of eligible sites) and show customized images, titles, and calls to action, depending on the card type.
You can also use Cards to point to other videos on your channel or another channel.
Here’s an example of one of my YouTube videos that I created and the traffic that is driven to my website. These stats are for one video (41,498 views are for a full year) and one blog post (6,965 visitors from Jan to June 2017.)
I did NO promotion for this video or blog post.
Can your blog benefit from some extra traffic from YouTube?
2. Create an eBook using your Best Blog Content
If your blog has been around for a while, you’ll have lots of content to choose from for repurposing into an eBook.
You really get a bonus when you create an eBook. Use the eBook as a giveaway on your blog or in your video content to grow your subscriber list.
You don’t have to create something brand new! Here are a few ideas to create ebooks from existing blog content.
Create a Round up ebook of your best blog posts
Here’s how to do it:
- Look through blog analytics over the past 6 months to determine the most popular posts within a specific topic.
- Copy all that content into a source program like Microsoft Word.
- Make any adjustments to the content to make it more readable for a downloadable file.
- Create a PDF.
- Use it a free giveaway to grow your subscriber list.
Add some fun and interesting images to the ebook to grab more attention.
Create an ebook from a single post
If you have a single blog post that is quite lengthy, like 1200 words or more, create a downloadable PDF to get more subscribers. This idea works well if your post is very informative and has the type of information a person can download and use as a reference.
Create a checklist of the highlights from a single post
If you have a long-form post that gives some type of instruction, create a checklist of the most important points. These are great when you want to highlight the main tasks that person needs to do to take action.
Building your subscriber list using ebooks leads to our next way to use existing content.
Almost forgot! With the ease of producing Kindle books on Amazon, you can even take your best content and convert it into a Kindle book for sale on Amazon.
Really, the ideas for reusing your blog content go on and on. Just make sure it’s high-quality!
3. Craft an Email Marketing Series from Existing Content
You may be thinking that email marketing is dead, right? Not so!
Jeff Bullas did a fabulous roundup of email marketing statistics. He found that “people who buy products marketed through email, spend 138% more than people that do not receive email offers.”
It’s a fact that email marketing drives customer acquisition and retention.
Here’s two great ways to reuse blog content with email marketing:
1 – Each time you publish a new blog post, write a personal broadcast email to your email list. Don’t just add the link to an email. Write something personal letting your subscribers know why they should read it.
Take a few excerpts from the blog post that will compell someone to click and read.
Guess what? You’ll get tons of traffic just from your new subscribers.
Many new bloggers seem to like the blog subscribe feature to notify blog subscribers of a new post. While that works, adding a personal touch helps you build that much needed like and trust from your audience. They’ll appreciate it!
2 – Create a learning series of emails that are sent over 5-day timeframe. Take one of your best posts and break it out into a learning series that you send to subscribers during a period of time.
Make sure you are delivering high value and add some extras to the email!
4. Does Facebook Livestream work for Reusing Blog Content?
Facebook Live is a key medium to use for repurposed blog content. People love it and you can get a lot of attention through live video. Take one of your more popular pieces of content and reuse for the topic of Facebook live discussion.
Keep it short and to the point, giving tons of great value to your audience. Let people know how to find your website too!
Here’s another reason to use Facebook Live to drive traffic. According to Google Trends (see chart above), Facebook Live Stream Search Popularity Has Risen Over 330% Since Facebook Live’s Rollout.
In recent Facebook news, they reported that users watch Facebook Live videos 3x longer than videos that aren’t live. In addition, users comment on Facebook Live video 10 times more than non-live videos.
You can’t argue with these Facebook Live statistics! Do you think you could get more attention and blog traffic by capturing an audience through Facebook Live video? You bet you can!
This is another great way to expand your reach to a new audience that might not otherwise have found your blog.
5. Create an Infographic from Repurposed Content
One popular strategy to reuse content is to create an infographic. I love these type of images because they highlight snippets of content that grab the attention of your audience.
People love infographics and love sharing them! Remember that old saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words.”
Here’s a great example of high infographic shares. This History of Content Marketing infographic was shared 2.6K times all over social media! It’s just a portion of the image. You can click the image to see the full infographic.
Imagine how much traffic you can get to your website from an informative, cool looking image like that! They are more engaging than an average image and attract a whole lot more attention.
You don’t have to be a professional graphic designer to create one! Figure out which tidbits of your content you want to reuse and then head over to one of these sites to use their free tools. I’ve used all three. It’s doable!
You can also hire someone to create one for you and those usually run about $500.
6. Create a Podcast from Blog Content You Already Created
You can discover a whole new audience of people who love listening to audio! Podcasting is a key repurposing strategy that helps you connect with people in a new way.
The best way to reuse orginal content in a podcast is to use a few pieces of content to get the discussion going. You can then reference that content in your podcast and provide links on your audio page.
Have you heard of Copyblogger? They have a fabulous channel called Rainmaker.fm. They do a great job of producing podcasts that convey other existing information on their website.
Check out their page at The Lede Podcast. I love that for each individual podcast, they reference the existing content below the audio, linking back to those previously published blog posts.
7. Create a Presentation
Have you heard of SlideShare? It’s been around for years and shows up on the first page of Google search results frequently. That’s not surprising since SlideShare receives over 60 million visitors a month!
SlideShare is a slide hosting service that was acquired by LinkedIn in 2012. You can upload various formats of presentation files like PowerPoint, PDF, Keynote, or OpenDocument. These slide shows can be viewed on SlideShare and also embedded in posts.
Here’s a cool presentation I found on SlideShare that explains in simple terms why it’s such a powerful platform. With over 9,000 views, I am certain the website got a ton of traffic from it!
I enjoyed viewing this one imparticular because it highlights the main points about a topic without overwhelming the reader.
Here’s how to do it:
Take a piece of content you already wrote and extract the key points. Presentations work well if you have any type of statistical information or other highlights that you want to summarize.
After you create your presentation and upload to SlideShare, you can embed it in your existing blog post and share in social media.
Another great way to use content you already wrote and drive traffic to your website.
8. Write a Detailed Post based on an Existing List
Lists are a wonderful way for readers to digest information. If you have a post you wrote that has a list of things without much detail, why take each item in that list and detail out in a new blog post?
It’s a great way to add onto to existing content and create relevant links on your site back to the original list.
Final Thoughts on Repurposing Content to Boost Traffic
As you can see, one piece of content can be used for publishing in multiple formats. My favorite of course is video because it’s so easy to get found in YouTube search results.
Be creative to find even more ways to repurpose your content. You may end up with an endless supply of traffic to your blog!
