Are you a frustrated Internet marketer that isn’t making any money?
Internet marketing can be very rewarding or not. You may be spending a great deal of time on content marketing, email marketing or social media – but not getting anywhere.
Sound familiar? Internet marketing mistakes are more common than you think. That’s why only a small percent of people who market their businesses online make the majority of the money.
The best course of action is to set up your business in such a way that you can maximize how much money you make.
Today, I have three of the biggest mistakes that most Internet marketers make and how to correct them.
Without a course correction, nothing will change, believe me.
I’ve seen so many top marketers preach to the masses that if “you just keep doing what you are doing, you will succeed.”
That is not true.
If you keep doing what you are doing and not getting results ever, then it’s time to evaluate and make a change.
Selling to the Wrong Audience can Destroy your Business
Have you ever wondered why no one is buying your products or opting into your list?
Selling to the wrong audience is one of the biggest Internet marketing mistakes. Many online marketers jump into their business without first defining who their target market is.
If you think your target audience is anyone, that would be an incorrect assumption. You’ll end up trying to market products or services to people who don’t want them.
For example, if I am trying to sell weight loss products to people who don’t need to lose weight, that business model will fail.
Instead, here are three crucial things to do to avoid this Internet marketing mistake:
- Define your ideal customer. Who is this person and what problems do they face? Are they in their twenties, forties, or something else? Are they men or women or both? What is their income bracket? All these characteristic matter. For example, what if you identify those who want to lose weight but don’t earn enough income to make a purchase? That would be another mismatch.
- Solve problems through content. Once you identify your ideal customer, understand the solutions they are after. Create content that provides solutions to their problems. For example, if you are targeting busy career women in their forties, you might write an online blog post about “how to lose weight for women even if you are busy.”
- Use permission-based email lists. Be sure to get permission to market to your target audience before sending emails. This is another mistakes that new Internet marketers make. There seems to be a trend towards removing the email opt-in but that usually leads to trouble. You’ll get the right people joining your list if they respond affirmatively to your inquiry. It’s really about quality and not quantity.
You Don’t Take Advantage of Social Media
Are you ignoring social media? This is another big Internet marketing mistake and more common than you think.
Using social media as one of your online marketing methods can boost your business like crazy. For example, over at KISSmetrics, a successful online business, they get 30% of their traffic from social media. Those numbers are hard to ignore!
Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn offer some of the best ways to contact specific customer groups.
Social media seems to get ignored by businesses because they think it’s just for fun or just for a younger generation.
These assumptions are wrong. Facebook and Twitter are now considered one of the most effective ways to reach highly targeted prospective customers.
You can also create strong relationships with potential customer or referrers. Social media is more personal and offers the opportunity to meet people who will get to know, like and trust you.
By spending some focused time each day in social media, you can avoid this Internet marketing mistake.
There are more than enough users on every social network that can help boost your Internet marketing business in a big way.
For example, here are some notable statistics from Twitter. Don’t you want in on that action?
Making the Internet Marketing Mistake of Being a Follower
Do you listen to Jim Rohn? You should.
He said this in one of his powerful trainings:
“Be a student, not a follower. Don’t just go do what someone says. Take interest in what someone says, then debate it, ponder it and consider it from all angles.”
It really resonated with me because one of the biggest Internet marketing mistakes I see is people being followers.
For example, many people attended a proven Internet marketing training for Twitter. A few days later, I learned that those same people followed the training exactly. When they messaged people on Twitter, they received the same exactly messaging back.
You see, everyone made the Internet marketing mistake of using the exact words and exact everything to do their social media marketing.
Instead, it’s more effective if you take that training and make it your own. Consider how these marketing tactics can fit into your online marketing and put your own spin on it.
If you do this, you won’t run into the problem where everyone is doing the exact same thing.
Online marketing mistakes are very common but you don’t have to make them.
Conclusion
I’ve given you three common Internet marketing mistakes that most people make.
Marketing your business online all starts with defining your target audience. Without this step, it will be difficult for your business to take off.
Social media is here to stay and you can take advantage of it in a number of ways. Which social network appeals to you the most and how will you get involved?
Finally, being a student instead of a follower is vital to your success and the ability to stand out from everyone else.
